Document Summary

The cognitive consequences of envy: attention, memory, and self- Heightened memory for things the advantaged person has done to achieve their status/object could result in attainment of it for oneself, resulting in increased fitness. Heightened memory may also allow for us to undermine them in their position to ensure that they don"t look bad by comparison. Also tested whether the increased attention and recall could be better accounted for by admiration/negative affect/arousal: last study looked at high-envy targets and their processing ability compared to low-envy targets. 2x2 design with sex (male/female) or envy level (envious/neutral) varying: told they were randomly being assigned an emotion and then to judge sections in a newspaper. Reviewed 2 interviews to be used in the newspaper. Priming procedure: emotional state activated through a writing exercise. Asked to write of 4 situations where they felt envious/write about daily life. Target interviews and dependent measures: questions asked in the interview were the same for each individual.
