Influenza outbreak (1917-1926): development of encephalitis linked to irritability, impaired attention, and hyperactivity in children (neurological epidemiology?: brain injured child syndrome (associated with mr) 1940s-50s: minimal brain damage/dysfunction (mbd) conveniently attributing behaviour problems to physical cause. 1950s: adhd referred to as hyperkinesis (poor filtering of stimuli in the brain: lead to definition of hyperactive child syndrome motor overactivity was considered main feature. 1970s: hyperactivity not the only symptom dsm criteria defined adhd to include inattentiveness and impulsivity. Adhd-pi often described as anxious and apprehensive, socially withdrawn, and may display mood disorders. Adhd-hi and adhd-c more likely to display problems in inhibiting behaviour and in behaviour persistence: more likely aggressive, defiant, and rejected by peers.
