B/c of play of differences, there is w/in the sign reference to other signs (points to something wholly other ) No absolute presence w/in language and culture. No one true reality b/c no transcendental signified that can be accurately & purely represented as absolute truth. Language is constructed of a play of differences. Habermas: a consensus can be reached behind every sentence b/tween speakers on the rationality/value of claims made in the sentence. Validity claims work as unifying/universal foundation for ethical/moral agreement.
