The gender binary is reproduced and produced in sports by re-enforcing gender stereotypes. For example, a woman cannot be too strong" or else she would be deemed as having too high of a testosterone level and will probably undergo gender veriicaion tests. In messner"s aricle, contemporary sports is a symbol of tradiional patriarchal power, authority, and idenity (204) . Violence is not uncommon in sports as it is fairly common to see two players from opposite teams engage in violent acts, such as in american football. By re-instaing that masculinity is equated to violence, it also implies that sports is not something that women can partake in as women are weak and fragile, thus they are unable to endure the physical violence on the ield. In fact, sporing for men are considered the norm whilst women who partake in sports have their own sub-genre, such as women"s hockey.
