Document Summary

For many years, organisms were classified as either plants or animals: wasn"t enough. 1969, robert whitaker proposed five kingdoms: animalia, plantae, fungi, protista, monera (prokaryotes) Majority of prokaryotes are in the domain bacteria. Archaea include: methane producers, organisms that live in hot springs and environments with high salt content. These extreme environments may be similar to conditions that existed. Two prokaryotic domains have differences in rrna and other biochemical during early earth history characteristics: some molecular characteristics of archaea are similar to eukaryotic cells. Protists include unicellular and multicellular organisms: some are plant-like, some are animal-like, or fungi-like, evolutionary relationships within the group are uncertain. Members of the plantae kingdom are autotrophic: capable of manufacturing their own food through photosynthesis. Animalia and fungi: cannot make their own food, rely on external sources of nutrition, heterotrophic. Animals are ingestive heterotrophs: engulf food and digest it internally.
