Example is if i am in a forest then i shouldn"t expect a fridge to pop up. These two processes combine, and it occurs very quickly. Focusing- you have to focus on certain stimuli, by filtering and zoning out unnecessary things. So professor attends to and makes you focus on the front lecture, so you attend to what they are talking about. Both stimulus (1) and personal factors (2) play a role in attention.
