The removal of all or part of a female"s genitalia for religious, tradiion, or socioeconomic reasons. Someimes known as familiarity breeds contempt, this explanaion suggests that long-term associaion with family members discourages sexual interest. Incest taboos are an atempt by ofspring to repress their sexual feelings toward their parents of the opposite gender. Inbreeding is forbidden because cultural groups recognize the potenial for impaired ofspring.
