Archaeology: insights on american history about historical archaeology. Rst historical archaeology took place 150 years ago. James hall was a civil engineer who wanted to learn more about his ancestor who arrived with the pilgrims aboard the may ower in 1620. Historical archaeology is the study of human behaviour through material remains whose interpretation is in some way affected by written history. Because it encompasses last 500 years it has to face colonialism and capitalism. Some say historical archaeology can be just a handmaiden to history . Meaning that archaeologists were just historians with trowels. Just used to ush out historical objects. But then it developed its own artifact-based methods for dating sites and components. Things changed a lot in the 60s due to the cultural resource management. Legislation from 1960s required that archaeology be done in advance of construction projects.
