As consumers, we have become accustomed to participating in numerous other major global industries without encountering or entering into a relationship with those who supply and produce the goods we enjoy. The recent surge in travelling an be attributed to thinking of culture as a process that occurs between people rather than being bound to discrete places or peoples. It does not define us so much as it travels along with us and is modified by our encounters with others. Travel begins to look more like tourism with a closer association to ideals of leisure and recreation, when we consider the ideals of individual betterment that are embodied in the 18th century phenomena as the european grand tour . 2) the western experience is the gradual development of distinctions between leisure and work, but the distinction may not be a result of industrialization and development of capitalist economies.
