Chapter 2: water sports: a tug of war over the river. As populations grow and urban areas rapidly expand, we are seeing more affluent. Such drastic expansions are fuelled by a fanatical desire to green the desert and to civilize unproductive arid landscapes to make them productive in relation to human needs. The 2 most opposed groups in relation to water usage are farmers (water allocation is fundamental to their ability to maintain agency, identity, and productivity) and recreational users. Both the mitchell and brisbane rivers support a range of economic and recreational activities. Brisbane river: provides drinking water, hydroelectricity, and irrigation for the south-east area of the state, used for recreational purposes in the urban part of the city (east), used in the most fertile farming area of the state. Mitchell river: supports numerous small fruit and vegetable farms, tourist area in the cairns, makes up majority of the wetlands on the western coast of the capes.
