Astronomy 2021A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Universal Turing Machine, Realizability, Turing Test
Document Summary
Reductive theories of mind hold that entities of one sort, such as mental states, are really just entities of another sort, such as physical states of the brain. Things are the first kind are reduced to things of the second kind. Reductive materialism holds that we can make such claims about all mental states and events. A particular kind of mental state (certain belief, sensation, feelings) is identified with a particular kind of physical state of the brain of nervous system. Generalizations that identify mental states and brain states. Chauvinistic: refers to a presumption that any creature with a radically different physical structure than humans cannot have the same kinds of mental states as humans. A consequence of generalizations about mind-brain identities that are standard in reductionist theories of mind. Multiple realizability: mental states are multiply realizable when the same types of mental state can be actualized, or realized in physically different ways by the brain.
