Document Summary

Bio guided reading assignment 16 outcomes- cooperation and conflict. Advantages and disadvantages of living in a group: Increased competition for food; increasing risk of starvation. Meaning of dominance hierarchy, kin selection, altruism, reciprocal altruism, eusocial, haplodiploidy. Dominance hierarchy: when some individuals dominate others in access to resources. For example the dominant or alpha individual gets priority accesses to resources such as food, shelter, mates. Kin selection: individuals should be more likely to help close relatives because increasing a close relative"s fitness means that the individual is helping to propagate some of its own alleles (helping keep its own genes in the gene pool). Altruism: when an individual helps another and it costs them. Reciprocal altruism: individuals will help nonrelatives if they are likely to return the favour in the future. Reciprocal altruism would be favoured by natural selection as long as individuals that do not reciprocate (cheaters) are denied future aid.
