Sections 20. 1 & 20. 2: how the relative position of fossils in sedimentary rock strata (higher vs lower) reveals their relative age. If they have not been disturbed, the strata are arranged in the order in which they formed, with the youngest layers on top. But strata have sometimes been uplifted, warped, or even inverted by geologic processes. Older fossils will be deeper and newer fossils will be up higher: ways in which fossils can form. Mounted fossil skeletons in museums were formed when dissolved mineral entered the spaces within the bones and then solidi ed. Preserved in amber, show ne details of organisms. Some, such as plant fossils (may be fossilized in coal, for example), are moulds or impressions; they have been compressed shortly after death, so three dimensional analysis may be dif cult. Footprints may be fossilized when an animal walks across mud.
