Document Summary

Cell fusion experiments & studies of yeast mutants identified. Human hela cells (a type of cancer cell) in different cell stages were fused, to determine whether one nucleus could in uence another. Result: speci c molecules in the cytoplasm cause cells to progress from g1 to. The cell cycle can be arrested at specific checkpoints. Cell has internal control systems that monitor its progression through out the cell cycle, by the action of a set of control proteins- cyclins. Three critical checkpoints: g1/s checkpoint: determines whether the cell can proceed through the entire cell cycle & divide. A cell cannot go through this checkpoint if the dna is damaged, or if the required hormone/ factor is absent: g2/ m checkpoint: a cell that passes this point will be committed to mitosis. Cell that are unable to pass this checkpoint if its dna was not properly replicated, or if the dna has been damaged.
