83 views9 pages

Document Summary

Fluid mosaic model: membranes are not rigid with molecules locked into palce but rather consist of proteins that move around within a mixture of lipid moelcuels. The lipid moelcuels exist in a bilayer, vibrate, move places and exchange places within the same half of the bilayer. Membranes contain an assortment of proteins, some involved int rasport, attachment etc. They are larger than lipid molecules, proteins move slowly in the fluid environment. The amount of protein versus lipid in the membrane depends on the function, protein compelx membranes have more protein and plasma membrane have half and half. Membranes are assymetrical, each side does something different. The fracture may split the membrane bilayers into inner and outer halves. (c) the particles visible in the exposed membrane interior are integral membrane proteins. It becomes obvious that particles on either side differ in size, number and shape. Biological membranes underlying fabric is the lipid molecules.
