Document Summary

8. 1 the cyle of cell growth and division: an overview. Although the cell division cycle may seem conceptually simple, grow-divide grow- divide, it is actually very complex and precise. If cells divide too quickly, daughter cells may be too small or lack essential cytoplasm/genetic material. If cells divide too slowly, they may grow inefficiently large, or have extra chromosomes. Binary fission: prokaryotic cell division- splitting or dividing two parts. When nutrients are abundant, prokaryotic cells skip step 2(illustration), they divide their cytoplasm as soon as dna has completed replication and chromosomes have separated. Origin of replication (ori): where bacterial cells start to replicate- in the middle of the cell, where the enzymes needed for dna replication are located. Once the ori has been replicated, the two new origins move to opposite poles of the cell. Next, new plasma membrane and cell wall material is assembled to divide the cell into two equal parts.
