Parasites: an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and receive (cid:271)enefits (cid:271)(cid:455) deriving nutrients at the host"s e(cid:454)pense. There are two groups to be concerned about: protists (single-celled) and helminths (multi-cellular parasites, means worm) Protists were first seen by antony van leeuwenhoek: most are heterotrophic (capable of using organic molecules for food) and obtain energy from other organisms. Chromalveolata supergroup: dinoflagellates two flagella, usually found in fresh water (part of the phytoplankton -> so its heterotrophic and photosynthetic) -> (look at figure. Protistan parasites attack the skin, and the digestive and urinary tracts. Leishmania -> is caused by the bite of an infected female sand fly -> phlebotomus. Vector an insect that transmits pathogens or parasites from an infected animal to humans. Visceral (body organ) disease called kala azar = black fever. Entameoba histolytica -> can kill tissues using their protein-digesting enzymes to penetrate the wall of the large intestine.
