5. 1 microbial reproduction is part of the cell cycle. There are three periods of the cell cycle: b period cell growth. The oldest bacterial cells have the longest generation time. It seems like daughter cells are not entirely the same by shape -> each cell contains cellular poles of different ages. Optimal conditions will speed up generation time. Generation time is useful because it can be used to determine how long it will take for symptoms to show. Incubation period: the time from entry of a pathogen into the body until the first symptoms appear -> faster generation time, shorter incubation period (meaning symptoms will surface quicker) Lag phase -> bacterial cells are preparing to divide. Stationary phase -> stabilizing population size (might be due to environmental conditions) In a broth tube, the waste products start to accumulate as the resources are getting used up > due to limitations leads to population to decline (viable cells = nonviable cells)
