Document Summary

Two types of figures exact and experimental. Exact are exactly what they sound like, numbers i know exactly e. g stoich coefficients. Experimental are what you record during an experiment e. g. temperature, masses. Number of digits or decimal places depend on the equipment used. Microlab, experimental procedure will tell you what to record. Trailing zeroes at end of value; if to the right of the decimal place it is significant. If to the left of decimal place, it is ambiguous, so we use scientific notation. There should be a small amount of error for last calculation. If multiplying and dividing, count sig figs and report answer to fewest significant figures. If adding or subtracting, count decimal places and report fewest number of decimal places. With a large number, write values using place holders for numbers you don"t know or change values so they have same exponent (if different exponents). In other words, transfer the digits right or left until it equals.
