African, american, or west indian slaves in the 18th c. neither were household slaves, their treatment was much like that of domestic staff in europe at a much later date. Romans based much of the social/economic fabric of their empire on slavery (especially after the decline in peasant farming in italy) Attitudes changed (because of christianity) but not to anti-slavery, rather to benevolence (kindness) and the supply of slaves from abroad went down. Emancipated slaves were joining the free-born poor in the struggle for existence. Tax collectors in the provinces would kidnap potential slaves (esp in asia minor) and ship them to specialist slave markets, one of the biggest was at delos, which processed 10k men, women, and children a day.
