Herculaneum, neighbor city, also preserved from volcano debris from mt. Ruins give a glimpse of daily life of townspeople during late republic/early empire. Rome is coninuously rebuilding throughout the empire so things are hardly preserved. Exploraions began under government patronage of the kingdom of the two sicilies. Pompeii located on bay of naples south of naples; close to sea; in the region of campania. Greeks inluenced pompeii as seen in the doric temple in the triangular forum of pompeii. Etruscan potery found in pompeii"s main forum --> thus etruscans contacted with the town. 5th century bc: pompeii was the preserve of the samnites (people related to the lains), but romans defeated samnites and took control of campania.
