Named after roman goddess of love and beauty. Often called evening star or morning star (usually only seen about 3 hours after sunset/3 hour before sunrise) Brighter than any object in sky except for the moon. From earth and hubble, little can be seen not looking at a solid surface, at layer of cloud which never clears. Nearly name size as earth with very similar density (often called earth"s twin) Surface of venus is drier than any desert on earth and two times hotter than a hot kitchen oven. Soviet union won space race to venus finished 15 successful missions to venus, including 10 landings. Surface of venus is 450c and under 1250pi of pressure. First space probe to be launched from a shuttle, back in 1989. Looped around sun 1. 5 times then spent 4 years orbiting venus. Second closest planet to sun and nearest planetary neighbour.
