The nature of nature: the attraction of the term nature and the label natural is largely premised on its perceived separation from the human. In modern societies we tend to distinguish between two worlds: human society and nature. It is the accessibility of landscape as a lived reality that makes it so important as an environmental entity around which management or protest groups may emerge: the value of landscape is constructed relative to personal values. It is often not the actual character of the intrusion that inspires positive or negative feelings in people, but the power of symbolism. Studies of rural britain: image and reality: the british countryside means different things to different people, and different groups have markedly different opinion of what constitutes legitimate activities and appropriate ways of life in rural britain.
