Document Summary

Chapter 4: a short history of anxiety and its disorders. Ancient greek and roman philosophers listed fear as one of a small number of basic natural passions/emotions: roman philosopher, epictetus noted two major social situations in which fear was natural (not disorders): When one wishes to please their social superior or authority figure anxious but normal. Ancient commentators also recognized personality dispositions that were: third century bce, andreas of charystos"s term (cid:498)pantophobia(cid:499) for patients who suffer from unmotivated fears of everything (first diagnostic category aimed specifically at an anxiety disorder) However, early medical writings did not conceive anxiety as a distinct condition, but rather one component of melancholia (depression) This was not recognized as a distinct disorder until the late nineteenth century. Hippocratic assumptions that fear and sadness occurred together served as the basic for western psychiatry for many centuries. Social anxiety was a widespread, normal fear. Robert burton (1577-1640) noted some anxiety was natural and not disorder.
