Approaches: formative, process, and summative evaluation and suggests these types of evaluation are distinct. For this chapter, designs relate exclusively to summative evaluations. Formative and process evaluations are typically defined with descriptions of strategies. Summative evaluations are generally associated with experimental, quasi-experimental, non-experimental designs. Focuses on quality of program content and program implementation. Occurs from time of program inception through implementation. Collects data and informs stakeholders of important findings that could potentially improve a program or its delivery, allows for appropriate chnages before the program is fully implemented and completed. Can be used to improve a program between implementation cycles, it is better to allow the formative evaluation to inform and guide the development and implementation of a program as it unfolds.
