A person is someone who is aware of their own existence over time and that they lived previously and can expect to live into the future. The idea of a being who can see their own future is morally significant compare killing them to someone who is not person you cannot cut off or thwart their wishes for the future. It"s relevant in the wrongness of killing. The major issue is that animals are capable of suffering, not the wrongness of killing them. There are some situations where a human is incapable of understanding things that you would give preference to the non-human person .
