In health research, persons are often asked to describe events and life experiences in their own words. These words from a narrative that reflects the individual way in which a person perceives events and life experiences. Thematic analysis: a general procedure for analyzing descriptions of personal experience. Units are coded into categories, and grouped into themes. The purpose is to discover the way in which the respondent thinks about and organizes her or his own experience. A researcher must be careful to avoid imposing his or her own way of thinking and organizing. 3 steps in thematic analysis: unitizing a.
