Document Summary
Human development psychology = the scientific study of age-related changes in our bodies, behaviour, thinking, emotions, social relationships, & personalities. Most theories about human development have come from observing people at different ages. These observations continue to influence our understanding of human development. Early philosophers approached the problems as one of determining whether internal factors, like intelligence, or external, like family environment, make a person good or bad . 3 ideas of the interactions of internal & external factors have been esp. important in western ideas about human development: The blank state (neutral, a blank canvas that is developed/affected by life, probably the best one) Christian doctrine of original sin (augustine of hippo: all humans are born selfish/stubborn, parents must discipline their children to overcome those tendencies. John locke proposed that the mind of a child is a blank state: empiricist approach = humans possess no innate tendencies & are shaped by their life experiences.
