This is the greatest sdoh because it influences most other determinants. Poverty exerts its effect on health through lack of material resources. Low income canadians are more likely to die early and to have suffered from more diseases. 23% of premature life loss is accounted for from income. People with lower incomes tend to have more chronic issues, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Affects health through practical, emotional, informational, and affirmation support. Relationships are as important as being health (ie. not smoking) 4/5 canadians say they have someone they can confide in. Men, single parents, and lower income reports less support. Social support assist coping and behavioral changes, lower psychological stress. Can influence directly (ie. reading meds, baby formula instructions etc. ) and indirectly (use of services, personal health, income etc. ) People with higher education tend to smoke less, more active, eat healthier. Paid work provides financial resources, a sense of purpose/identity, social contacts and opportunities.
