Nursing 2230A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter week 8: Pharmacovigilance, Superior Vena Cava, Thoracic Cavity
Document Summary
Oral replacement of fluids and electrolytes is appropriate as long as the patient is not so physiologically compromised that oral fluids cannot be replaced rapidly. Oral rehydration solutions have ad a very positive impact on mortality related to diarrhea around the world, orhs are either glucose-electrolyte solutions or polymer based solutions (eg made from rice, wheat, or maize) Oral replacement of fluids is contraindicated if the patient has a mechanical obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract, is at risk for aspiration, or has impaired swallowing. A feeding tube may be necessary such as when the patients gastrointestinal tract is healthy, but the patient cannot ingest fluids. Patients who retain fluids and have fluid volume excess require restricted fluid intake. Is often difficult for patients, particularly if they take meds that dry the oral mucous membranes or if they breathe through the mouth.
