In 1984 the who updated its conceptualization of health as: The extent to which an individual or group is able on the one hand, to realize aspirations and satisfy needs, and on the other hand, to change or cope with the environment. This section introduces the major determinants of health affecting canadians. Social support networks: relationships are vital to health, social support has been linked with positive outcomes; whereas social isolation and exclusion and lack of supportive relationships increase stress and vulnerability to disease, canadians have high levels of support! Canada since the early 90"s: workplace stress is linked to increased risk of physical injury, high blood pressure, depression and increase in drug and alcohol usage. Inadequate and insecure housing can affect health directly and indirectly.
