Document Summary

Congenital disease: present at birth, may or may not be due to genetic abnormalities. Genetic disease: determined by genes which can manifest at any stage of life. May or may not be a genetic basis for these defects. Most common cause of mortality in the 1st year of life. 4 types: malformation, disruption, deformation, syndrome. Intrinsic cause (i. e. something inherently wrong) for the abnormality in the development of the limb or organ (e. g. polydactyl, congenital heart disease, foramen in heart). Extrinsic cause for the physical abnormality (i. e. mechanical force) Can be localized (e. g. cloved foot) or generalized on the fetus. Compression of a growing fetus by a biomechanical force (e. g. small maternal uterus, large fetus, oligohydramnios). Oligohydramnios = decreased amount of amniotic fluid. Breakdown or interruption of normal development due to secondary destruction of an organ or body region. A secondary disruption of a normally-developing organ or body system. Usually extrinsic etiology (e. g. amniotic band causing limb amputation).
