The rhetorical expression of youthful revolt was confined to a tiny minority and the gap that separated young people from their parents was great. There became a big shift to the left and youth became increasingly more aware of politics and specifically drew an interest to equality (liberal) Communism and capitalism were charged with stagnation and repression and instead of the typical male proletariat, jobs were also held by blacks, students, women, and homosexuals. The left became redefined as repressive tolerance which believed people were responsible for liberalizing old constraints or providing for the betterment of all. The new left considered a new theory of justice as equal opportunity or economic security . They believed that individualism would maximize private freedom and the unrestrained liberty to express autonomous desires and have them respected and institutionalized by society at large. There was an emphasis on identity - private identity, sexual identity, cultural identity.
