Controversy about the nature of state power has increasingly dominated modern political analysis and goes to heart of ideological and theoretical disagreements. The pluralist state i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. Pluralist theory of the state has a very clear liberal lineage. Includes the belief that the state acts as a referee in society. Pluralism: the belief in or commitment to diversity or multiplicity; or the belief that power in modern societies is widely and evenly distributed. The view of the state are traced back to political thinkers such as thomas hobbes and john locke. Their concern was to examine the grounds of political obligation - grounds on which the individual is obliged to obey and respect the state. State of nature: a society devoid of political authority and of formal (legal) checks on the individual; usually employed as a theoretical device.
