State is understood from 4 perspectives- idealist, functionalist, organizational and international. The idealist perspective consists of 3 moments of social existence: family, civil society and state (hegel) Functionalist- focus on the role or purpose of the state institutions. Organizational- defines the state as the apparatus of government in a broad sense, they are responsible for the collective organization of social existence and are funded at the public"s expense. International- views the state as the basic unit of international politics. The state emerged in the 16th and 17th century europe as a system of centralized rule, included the church. Marxists explain the emergence of the state in economic terms (feudalisim to capitalism) Developed into a nation-state in the 19th century. Pluralist state- power in modern societies is widely and evenly distributed. Capitalist state- state cannot be understood separately from economic structure. Leviathan state- opposition towards state intervention in economic and social life.
