Nations are comprised of objective and subjective features; political and cultural. Herder emphasized language as people"s most distinctive tradition, and said that nations are natural. Cultural nations view themselves as extended kinship groups distinguished by common descent. If a nation is primarily political its membership is inclusive, meaning one does not have to t into ethnic criteria to join. Humankind is naturally divided into a collection of nations which are organic. Links the idea of a nation with the belief in popular sovereignty. Commitment to national self determination; nation is a sovereign entity. Each nation has the right to freedom and self determination. All human beings are of equal moral worth. Fear degeneration into a state of nature. Concerned with the promise of social cohesion and public order. See the nation as an organic entity born out of the tendency of people to gravitate towards those with the same view, lifestyles, etc. Nationhood rooted in idea of a shared past.
