Document Summary
Aboriginal canadians are those who can trace their ancestry back to before the arrival and permanent settlement of europeans in what would become canada. Some estimates place the number at 2-3 million, or about 7 to 9 per cent of the national population, while others estimate that the actual number is closer to one third of this. They are twice as likely as other canadians to be unemployed. They also earn one third less than non-aboriginal canadians. 4/10 aboriginals have not completed high school. The terms indians, metis, and eskimos were used to describe various segments of the aboriginal population. Communitarianism is the belief that communities and communal identities are essential to individual dignity and the maintenance of truly democratic societies. A related premise was that treating persons identically, without regard for their group membership and the historical conditions experiences by members of their group.
