Chapter 7: elections, electoral systems, and voting behaviour. To ensure meaningful competition all citizens should have the right to run in elections and all political parties should have the right to nominate candidates and campaign on their belief. Not considered to be democratic if only those candidates authorized by the state or other institutions are allowed to run. Universal suffrage: the right of all adult citizens to vote regardless of such characteristics as gender, ethnicity, wealth or education. Voters need to be provided with useful info if their vote is to be meaningful. To ensure that they are fair, it is important that the process be overseen by an independent commission. Paly a role in ascertaining whether elections have been properly conducted in many countries that have recently become democratic. Ensure that those elected to office are accountable for the people, elections are usually held once every four or five years in a democracy.
