Document Summary
Pavlov: learning can be made on basis of when things occur. Thorndike + bf skinner: people always motivated to do something. Learning experience produces a relatively enduring change in behavior/capabilities. Relatively permanent change in behavior independent of maturation/temporary factors. Habituation and sensation change in behavior resulting from repeated exposure to a stimulus. Classical conditioning two stimuli associated with one another (ex. seeing a dog and being bitten) Operant conditioning learn to associate responses with specific consequences (ex. smile = good) Behaviorists focused on how organisms learn (study how experience influences behavior) Believe there are laws of learning that apply to all organisms. Treat organism as a tabula rasa (blank tablet), where learning experiences are inscribed. Habituation decrease in strength of response to a repeated stimulus (ex. don"t feel clothes) Simplest form of learning (occurs across species) -> occurs in cns. Different from sensory adaptation (decreased response to continuously present stimulus)
