Language = system to generate in nite possible meanings. Psycholinguistics is the study of psychological aspects of language. Components of language: grammar, syntax (order of words, semanticity (meaning, generatively ( nite alphabets can combine into in nite number of words, displacement (ability to describe things that are imaginary) Surface structure are words, deep structure is the underlying meaning of those words. Structure of language: phoneme = no meaning, just letters, morpheme = smallest unit of meaning, must have meaning ex: s conveys plural, words, phrases, sentences, discourse = sentences combined tin paragraphs. Cross & words are not 2 morphemes b/c they do not convey separate meanings. Bottom up processing: patterns > syllables > meaning (more logical) Top down processing: interpreting things based on expectations ex: reading the bead store as the bread store . Speech segmentation allows us to expect when words end: we learn certain sequences that tend to be at the end of words, based on context.
