Is development continuous and gradual: or is it discontinuous, progressing through qualitative distinct stages, stability vs change, do our characteristics remain consistent as we age. Attachment: strong emotional bond between child and primary caregivers. Still face experiment: normal interaction the mother is interacting with the baby and communicating, when the mother holds a straight face, the child tries to make their mother communicate, and later becomes distressed. Identity: gender, ethnicity, social roles, personality, values etc, not straightforward concept. Environmental origins: parents, gender-appropriate play, household chores, peers, ages 4-12 spend more time in same-gender groups, schools, textbooks, more attention to boys, academic counselling, reinforcement and punishment, big boys don"t cry, observational learning.
