Basic research may be carried out in a lab or in real-world settings: applied research uses principles discovered through basic research to solve practical problems. Psychodynamic perspective: searches for the causes of behaviour within the inner workings of our personality, emphasizes the role of the unconscious processes, sigmund freud developed the first and most influential psychodynamic theory. Psychoanalysis: freuds great challenge: freud was a physician, and many of his patients would come to him with symptoms such as blindness, paralysis, pain and odd phobias. Controversy with this theory: any disagreed with the heavy emphasis on childhood sexuality, other psychologists viewed this theory as difficult to test. The behavioural perspective: focuses on the role of the external environment in governing our actions, from this perspective, our behaviour is jointly determined by habits learned from previous life experiences and by stimuli in our immediate environment. Behaviourism: a school of thought that emphasizes environmental control of behaviour through learning.
