Document Summary

Memory refers to the processes that allow us to record and later retrieve experiences and information. Encoding: refers to getting information into the system by translating it into a neural code that you brain processes. Retrieval: the process through which information is recalled and pulled out of storage. Proposes that memory has three major components: sensory memory, short-term or working memory, and long-term memory. The model does not assume that each component corresponds to a specific structure within the brain, rather they may involve interrelated neural sites. Holds incoming sensory information just long enough for it to be recognized. Composed of different subsystems called sensory registers. Visual sensory register is called the iconic store. Auditory sensory register is called the echoic store. Echoic memory lasts longer than iconic memory. Holds information that we are conscious of at any given time; also referred to as working memory because it consciously processes codes and works on information.
