Document Summary

Chapter 15 psychology: stress, coping and health. Patients learn how they react with others by playing it out with therapists. Therapy is a gradual process (can"t cure yourself overnight, but can make small changes and improvements stage by stage) Preferred means of treatment for emotional problems. In this class, stress will be discussed under the following subtopics: Stress: a pattern of physiological, behavioral, emotional and cognitive responses to real or imagined stimuli that are perceived as blocking a goal or endangering our well-being. Whether physical or psychological, they place demands on us that endanger well-being, requiring us to adapt in some manner. The greater the imbalance between demands and resources, the more stressful a situation is likely to be. Major negative events such as being victim of a major crime or sexual abuse, the death or loss of a loved one, an academic or career failure, or a major illness, also require adaptation.
