Document Summary

In this class, somatic therapy will be discussed under the following subtopics: Treatment of emotional or behavioral problems through psychological techniques. Used in conjunction with some form of talking therapy . Patient may be too down to talk. Brain surgery in the absence of obvious organic damage. Moniz (1935) reports a calming effect for prefrontal lobotomy. Separate prefrontal lobes from rest of brain. Patients become more docile but also show a whole variety of problems: Iq loss, severe lack of emotion, reduced capabilities in planning and in some cases, the patient dies. Cut cingulum bundle (fibers connecting prefrontal lobes to limbic system) Does the same thing as psychosurgery as in reducing emotional signals but it"s better because it shows fewer side effects and people are going to respond to it a lot better. Seems effective for obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd) and depression. Caution: should be used only as last resort, never on patient who can not consent, irreversible.
