Study of physical, cognitive, and social/emotional changes throughout the lifespan. Longitudinal: same individuals studied for a long time: problems: subject attrition (subjects drop out), practice effects (learn the questions on the measures) Cross-sectional: people of different ages are studied at the same time: problem: cohort effects, differences due to different life experiences. Longitudinal-sequential: persons of different ages are studied over long periods of time. Ovulation: mature egg released and picked up by the fallopian tubes. About 300 million sperm in each ejaculate (about 200 reach egg) Conception occurred when one sperm penetrates (20 mins) 36 hours after fertilization, egg begins to divide. 5-7 days after conception, zygote implants in lining of the uterus. Mesoderm into skeleton, muscles, circulatory, reproductive system. Trophoblast cells develop into the placenta: placenta nourishes fetus and acts as a site for exchange of substances between the mother"s blood and the umbilical cord. Umbilical cord carry nutrients and oxygen to embryo (develops in 5th week)
