Document Summary

Intelligence: the ability to acquire knowledge, think and reason logically, and deal with the environment. Study of intelligence with his studies of hereditary genius. Test launched the modern intelligence-testing movement (stern) intelligence quotient (iq): (mental age/chronological age) x 100: problems measuring intelligence in adults, average is 100. Psychometrics: the statistical study of psychological tests. Tries to provide a measurement based map of the mind. Reduces a large number of measures to smaller related clusters, each cluster containing variables that correlate to each other and less to other clusters. The g factor: intelligence as general mental capacity. Spearman observed school grades in different subjects were almost always positively correlated. Intellectual performance is determined partly by a g factor (general intelligence), and partly by the special abilities required for that task. Problem: savant below average intelligence, but excel in one particular area (lack developed corpus callosum, larger prefrontal cortex), males more likely. Problem: learning disabilities usually only effect specific skills.
