Personality: the ways of thinking, feeling, and acting that characterize a person"s responses to life situations (components of identity, perceived internal cause, perceived organization and structure. Conversion hysteria: physical symptoms (paralysis, blindness) that appear suddenly with no apparent physical cause. Symptoms were related to painful memories and feelings that have been repressed. Psychic energy: powers the mind and constantly presses for either direct or indirect release. Conscious mind consists of mental events we are currently aware of. Pre-conscious mind contains memories we are unaware of at the moment but that can be called into conscious awareness. Unconscious mind is things that lie beyond your awareness. Id: exists within unconscious mind; no direct contact with reality and functions irrationally: pleasure principle: seeks immediate gratification, regardless of rationality. Ego: functions at conscious level: reality principle: tests reality to decide when the id can safely discharge its impulses (delays gratification until conditions are safe)
