Document Summary

A distinction is usually made between studying dreaming as the process by which dreams arise and studying dreams as the content and potential meaning of dreams. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the rise of rationalism led to a new theory that dreams were merely meaningless random expressions of physiologic activity during sleep: according to this point of view, dreams do not mean anything. In 1900, freud published a book called the interpretation of dreams. For freud, dreams do really possess a meaning one of wish-fulfillment. He insisted that all dreams be considered the result of wish-fulfillment even when they do not appear to be. This theory proves that the purpose of dreams is to protect us from disturbing impulses so that we can sleep.
