Document Summary
Clinical assessment: series of steps designed to gather information about person + their environment to make decisions about nature, status + treatment of psychological problem. Starts with referral questions to determine goals of assessment + types of tests required. Factors that affect which assessment procedures are used: patient"s age, patient"s medical condition, description of their symptoms, psychologist"s theoretical perspective. E. g. patient with depression behavioural psychologist would measure environmental cues that produce low moods + thoughts, psychoanalytic psychologist would assess early childhood. Assessment itself can have temporary therapeutic effect, lessen symptoms once patient is more self-aware. Screening: assessment before referral to identify people who have problems but are unaware or reluctant to share. Process members of groups (e. g. community group, patients in medical clinic) given brief measure where certain cutoff indicates possibility of problem: e. g. score of 16+ on ces-d scale for depression indicates possibility of severe depression. If individual is above cutoff, more thorough evaluation needed.
